Teamwork Games

Teamwork Games

Giant Marbles:

The students will be divided into teams of 4 or 5 and line up behind the playing area. There will be a number of yarn balls alongside of the players and a beach ball in the playing area for each team. The object is for the team to get their beach ball into a specified area. However, they are only allowed to move the beach ball by throwing the yarn balls at it. If all of the team’s yarn balls have been thrown, one player from the team is allowed to collect a number of the yarn balls and bring it back to their team. The team is also allowed to throw at other teams beach balls to prevent it from entering the specified area.
Equipment: Large Number of Yarn Balls, Two Beach Balls

Twisted Sisters Disco Inferno:

Have a small group of students (5-6) hold hands in a straight line so that they are all facing in the same direction. The person at the end puts their hand up against a wall or holds onto a pole. The task is for everyone, including the person with their hand around the pole or up against the wall, to end up with their arms folded across their chest. None of the students can let go of their hands and the person at end must keep hand on the wall or pole. There are a number of known ways to solve this problem. Give the students plenty of time to discuss possible solutions. You should have the group of students holding hands in a straight line.
-One end person is either holding onto a pole or has their hand against a wall, and the other end person is at the end of the line with one hand free. One solution to this problem is that the end person, who is free to move, leads the entire group under the arm of the person attached to the pole or wall. This end person continues to lead the group under the wall person's arm again and again until everyone has their arms crossed.
-Finally the end person turns and faces the opposite direction w/o taking their arm off of the wall (this crosses their arms). A second solution is by going off of the disco inferno theme (a late70's Staying Alive Dance move). Everyone crosses their arms overhead in a disco like turn to cross arms.

Nuclear Waste Transfer:

The goal is for 8 students, standing in a circle, holding 8’ ropes, to cooperatively move a 2-liter soda bottle filled with nuclear waste, (water with food coloring) which sits on a wooden octagonal shaped figure from a start point to an end point without spilling the nuclear waste.
Equipment: 8’ ropes, 2-liter soda bottle, water, food coloring, desk

Indiana Jones:

The objective of this game is to work as a team to help chase Indiana Jones around in a circle and knock him or her over with the cage ball or "boulder". Two circles are made up from the students, one small circle for the inside and then one large circle for the outside. The ball will be put on the inside of the circle and then rolled by the outside line as well as the inside line. An Indiana Jones will be chosen (up to 2 people) and will try and out run the ball inside the circle.
Equipment: Cage ball,

Construction Zone:

Group members, using verbal clues and cues, will assist other group members (the construction workers), who will be wearing blindfolds, to assemble a large puzzle. The challenge is not only for the blindfolded group members to complete the puzzle, but also for the sighted group members to communicate in a clear manner so that the construction workers can successfully follow the directions given to them. Blindfold as many of the group members as you wish. After blindfolding the designated construction workers, the sighted group members mix up the parts of the puzzle. Although there is no end to the types of puzzles you or your students could create, we assume the puzzle you will use will become a square when assembled.
-The sighted group members give five verbal directions to the blindfolded construction workers. The
construction workers will need to be guided to the puzzle pieces and then be guided in assembling them.
-The sighted groups are not allowed to touch the puzzle pieces or the blindfolded group members.
Make sure the working area is completely free of obstructions or other physical structures.
Equipment: Blindfolds, puzzle

Radioactive River:

Set half of the cones up on one side of the activity area, spreading all the way down the long side of the area. Set the other half of cones on the other side of the activity area, across from the first set of cones. This will be the "river" and you can determine the width of the river should be depending on your students. Divide the class into either two or three teams. Give each team 1 scooter and 2 or 3 carpet squares.
-Explain to them that their mission is to get their entire team across the "river" without having
anyone touch the radioactive river. If any member of the team touches the river at any time, the
whole team must start over.
-If the team has to start over, make sure the students know that the next person to go across the
river is the next person in line. The students that were already across the river go to the end of
the line. This allows for everyone to have a chance to get across. Equipment: 6-8 cones, 2-3
scooters (depending on the number of teams you have), 3-8 carpet squares

The River Boat:

The objective is for the group to transport themselves across a large open space. There is one basic solution to this task, but it usually takes a group the better part of a class period to successfully complete the challenge. The team will transfer themselves from one area to the other without touching the ground with their bodies. The group may use two folded tumbling mats (or pieces of plywood) to create a riverboat. All members of the team and all equipment must make it to the other side. 2 standard tumbling mats or pieces of plywood two small tires 2 long jump ropes or pieces of rope If a group member touches the ground with any part of their body, the entire group must go back to the starting position. All equipment must be brought across the river. No one may call a teammate by his or her last name.
Equipment: Tumbling mats, plywood, small tires, jump ropes

Whitewater Cascade:

Move a person along the "river” on the laps of the seated people to the end. Form a long, doubleline, facing each other. Sit opposite, with feet straight out and next to the side of the other’s ships. Tighten up the total line so everyone is snug. The line can curve. This works better outside and on a gentle slope of a hill. Now, people enter the river by laying flat on their backs, head down river. The lines begin to move the person along the rapids, with hands underneath and with knees raised as necessary to move the person along. Reflect feelings at the end and then join the river at the end
Equipment: None

Moonball:

The ball must start from one end of the line to the other without it touching the ground, by only hitting up from person to person. Every time the ball touches the floor, or someone comes totally off their spot the group has to get rid of one spot. Sharing the remaining carpet squares occurs because no one sits out of the game when they lose theirs. In the end, a group could all be sharing one among all the members.
Equipment: 2 teams, group of 5-10, carpet pieces, 2 balls

Balloon Relay

The group will relay balloons back and forth without touching the balloon with their hands. (Partners)
Equipment: Balloons

Blob Tag:

Groups are in pairs…one pair is “it” as the blob and they try to tag others which then connect to the pair and the blob gets bigger. Each tag makes the blob bigger and eventually everyone becomes part of the blob.
Equipment: None

Ship to Shore:

Groups of no more than 6 students each get a scooter and a rope (6ft.). All groups begin on a mat (The ship), and must reach an island on the other side of the general space without touching the floor. In the center of the area is a “buoy” (a volleyball pole with padded base) that all students in the group must reach before continuing. Students will then work together to get their group to the island safely.
Equipment: Scooters, ropes, mats

 Empty Nest:

Groups try to get take the balls from other groups to add to their Hula-hoops (home) Groups with the most balls at the end wins.
Equipment: Hula-hoops, balls

Asteroids:

One group verses another group…the first group who hits and dominates the other team wins. Koosh balls are all over the floor and on go you must pick a koosh ball up and try to hit someone on the opposite team below the waste. Once you get hit with a koosh ball you sit on the floor. The only way to get back in is to have someone on your team pass you the koosh ball to you. Object of the game is to work as a team to be the last team standing.
Equipment: Koosh balls

Weeping Willow:

Group in circle formation, one person in the middle leaning back and forth, side to side as the rest of the group supports his/her body preventing him/her from falling.
Equipment: None

Football Tag:

One group verses the other….one group has a coin, team must hurdle up and decide who is going to hold the coin and try to make it to the other side for a touch down without getting tag. Everyone line up with hands folded leaving the other team unaware of who is holding the coin. The defense team is trying to tag everyone is sight hoping to tag the person with the coin before that person get the touch down. One you are tagged you must stop and show your hands. If you don’t have the coin you can continue running forward, if you do have the coin the other team gets the next turn with the coin.
Equipment: Quarter

Equipment: Clay, instructor’s cards.

The Wave:

Group of people line up face to face arms distance with palms touching opposite sides. One person from the group will run between the two lines of people facing each other. The object is for the runner to trust that the group will break apart hands just before the runner reaches them. Breaking apart or raising your hands as the runner runs through makes a wave appearance.
Equipment: none

Ants on a Log:

The class is divided in half with one half on one side of a balance beam, log, or wire and the other half on the other side. The objective is for the students to maneuver around one another and make it to the opposing side of the piece of equipment, without falling off of the log. If one person falls, everyone must go back to where they started.
Equipment: Balance Beam, Long Rope, Wire

Towel Ball:

Students will be in pairs with one towel between them. Pairs will be scattered on both sides of a net. Points are scored if one pair successfully plays the ball to a pair on their side, and then played over the net to a pair on the other side. The ball is caught and “volleyed” with the towel, so students must work together to work the tension in the towel, as well as communicate with each other and other pairs to pass and volley. Equipment: One towel per pair, net, ball.

Pass It On:

Students will be sitting in a circle with their feet extended towards the center. One object will be placed between a student’s feet. When the clock starts, the students will receive and pass the object to the next person until the object reaches the first person. Game may be modified with different and/or multiple objects.
Equipment: gator-skin ball, cone, fleece ball, etc.

The Floater:

Students will scatter themselves throughout general space. Using a large beach ball as the floater, students will attempt to keep it in the air by striking it with their hands or feet. Students may not strike the ball consecutively. One point will be given for a strike with hands, and two points for a strike with foot.
Equipment: Large beach ball.

The Amazing Maze:

Students will be broken into groups of 3-4. One student in each group will be blindfolded, and the rest will be giving verbal instruction. Remind the students to be clear with their instructions and SAFETY COMES FIRST! When the student safely and successfully reaches the exit, another student in the group may try a different course, or the same course in the opposite direction. Students must be clear and safe with their directions, as other students will also be blindfolded in The Amazing Maze. Make multiple courses to complete.
Equipment: May include gym mats, jump ropes, cones – anything to make boundaries.
Suggestion: Use color to distinguish between each course.
